"For most of Hines’ life, LGBTQ rights were nonexistent, and being an openly gay black man meant that he was at an extremely high risk of being fired or assaulted. In the documentary, he says his mother knew he was gay before he told her, and that he would casually discuss his love life with his father. His straight brother Gregory, also a performer, used to go to gay clubs with Maurice and had no hangups about dancing with gay men. Basically, Hines’ family was “woke” decades before being woke was a thing."
Um....Gregory Hines was straight?

Is Maurice Hines' claim to fame that he's the brother of Gregory Hines? Why else should we know him?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 6, 2019 9:34 PM |
Because he's as legendary a dancer as his brother.

I don't know much of Gregory Hines but I recognise his face and his name. I've never heard of Maurice Hines. There's clearly a disparity in fame between the two.

You know Gregory Hines because he was a movie and TV star. I didn't say Maurice was as famous as Gergory, I said he was as legendary a dancer as him.

Shit, there was a third brother?

So sorry you're butthurt over being wrong.

If someone is legendary, fame plays a part in that. I'm surprised that has to be explained to you.

I only know Maurice from that great dancing duet they did in "The Cotton Club".

Gregory Hines was a pretty big star in the 80s -- "White Nights", "Cotton Club", "Running Scared." I worked in a cinema complex in high school, those were popular long-running films. I knew he was gay-friendly but also that he had lots of affairs with women, even when he was married :-( Fluid, possibly, but definitely not gay.
I am very interested to see the documentary about Maurice. I didn't know he was openly gay. He was always in Gregory's shadow. It could not have been easy.

Gregory Hines was straight in what lifetime? As much as I would see him on Christopher St.... I never saw Maurice, though. Sure, GH was married to a woman and had a couple of children but do many other gay men.
Below he is with Savion Glover (Whatever happened to him?)

And just because someone is famous in an area that you don't follow doesn't make them any less famous. You know dick about dance, so because it's something YOU don't know, then of course Maurice Hines HAS to be some obscure nobody.
You're an idiot.

No one stated that but you.
Gregory Hines is more famous than Mo. Therefore, he's a more famous dancer. For a legend to grow, it has to spread to more and more people... not just dance teachers like yourself...

No dear, it's been the point you've been attempting to drive home since you started your weak argument.
The only reason you know Gregory Hines is a dancer is because he also became a more famous actor. Had he never had that Hollywood fame, you'd be mistakenly dismissing him as a nobody as well.
Sit the fuck down already. You're embarrassing yourself.

If you have to put words in people's mouths, your argument ain't going too well. Never mind sit, you should lie down.

I'll end the argument above...
I initially knew of them as the Hines brothers. It was always Maurice and Gregory for the longest and then somewhere and at some point, Gregory pulled ahead and I heard less and less about Maurice.
