Tyler James Williams, a renowned American actor, shared the revelation of his near-death experience five years ago due to complications related to undiagnosed Crohn’s disease.
The 30-year-old actor, best known for his role in ‘Everybody Hates Chris’, recollected the harrowing experience in an interview with Men’s Health. He detailed the emergency surgery to remove part of his lower intestine, and months of relying on intravenous nutrition and living with an ostomy bag.
During the ordeal, Williams’ weight dropped to 105 pounds, and he struggled to stand on his own.
Williams’ health crisis was triggered by intense diet and exercise while managing a demanding filming schedule.
After consulting a gastroenterologist at NYU Langone, it was revealed that Williams had severe inflammation and scarring, causing a bottleneck in his gut. This turned out to be a significant Crohn’s disease flare-up, despite never having been diagnosed with the condition before.
Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the digestive tract, was identified as the cause.
While there was a genetic predisposition within Williams’ family, he was the only one displaying symptoms at the time.
Following the diagnosis, Williams underwent surgery to remove six inches of his lower intestine. However, due to extensive damage, his intestines perforated, leading to a life-threatening septic episode and another emergency surgery. He relied on an ostomy bag and intravenous nutrition during his recovery.
Williams vividly recalls the fear for his life during the septic episode and the resounding determination to survive the ordeal.
Today, five years later, Williams has regained his health, weighing a muscular 145 pounds. He has made lifestyle changes, including giving up alcohol, coffee, and red meat to prevent further health complications.
Additionally, Williams has embraced alternative methods such as a marijuana prescription to manage inflammation and appetite. His fitness routine now focuses on steady workouts and incorporates meditation.
The near-death experience prompted Williams to reevaluate his career choices, opting for roles with a purpose-driven focus in the future.
‘When I eventually recovered, I reflected on what would truly make my life fulfilling,’ Williams shared.
